About Workout Timer
A workout timer tracks intervals — work and rest periods — for HIIT, Tabata, circuit training, EMOM (every-minute-on-the-minute), and similar interval-based workouts. The ZTools Workout Timer runs in the browser with audio cues at start, transitions, and finish. Configure work duration, rest duration, number of rounds, prep countdown, and round-of-N. Supports fullscreen for studio / gym use, persists settings across sessions, and works offline once loaded.
Use cases
- Tabata workout (8 rounds × 20s work + 10s rest). Classic 4-minute Tabata. Tool counts down each interval with audio cues.
- HIIT (30s work / 30s rest × 10). 10-minute HIIT session. Tool tracks total time + current round.
- Circuit training (5 stations × 45s work + 15s rest, 3 rounds). Full circuit with multi-round structure.
- EMOM (every-minute-on-the-minute, 20 rounds). Minute-based intervals. Audio at top of each minute.
How it works
- Configure intervals. Work duration (1-300s), rest duration (0-300s), rounds (1-50), prep countdown (3-10s).
- Pick preset. Tabata, HIIT, EMOM, circuit, custom.
- Start. Audio "GO!" at start; warning beeps at 3-second countdown to transition; "REST!" at end of work; "GO!" at next round.
- Track. Display: current round, current phase (work/rest), time remaining, total elapsed, total remaining.
Examples
Input: Tabata: 20s work / 10s rest × 8 rounds
Output: 4-minute total. Tool counts each round; audio at every transition.
Input: EMOM 20 minutes
Output: Audio at top of every minute. Display shows current minute / 20.
Frequently asked questions
Will audio play if my screen is off?
Some browsers throttle background tabs after a few minutes. For reliability, keep the tab in the foreground.
Custom workout sequences?
Yes — chain different interval blocks together (e.g. warmup → Tabata → cooldown).
Spotify / music integration?
No — tool is timer-only. Run your music separately and put both on speakers.
Privacy?
All client-side.
Pro tips
- For Tabata (30 years of evidence), strict 20/10 × 8 — total 4 min. Don't add extra rest; the discomfort is the training.
- For HIIT, work-to-rest ratio matters: beginners 1:2, intermediate 1:1, advanced 2:1.
- Always include 5-10 min warmup before HIIT — cold starts injure.
- Audio reliability matters mid-workout — keep tab in foreground.
