About Video Compressor
A video compressor reduces the file size of a video by lowering its resolution or bitrate, or by re-encoding it with an efficient codec, making it easier to email, upload or share over slow connections. The ZTools Video Compressor has two modes. On this device, it plays the video in real time, draws each frame at a smaller size and records a WebM (VP9 or VP8 video with Opus audio) in your browser, so a 10-minute video takes about 10 minutes and nothing is uploaded. On our server, ffmpeg re-encodes it as an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio, far faster than real time, with a quality preset (high, balanced or smallest file), a maximum height (1080p down to 360p) and an option to remove the sound. The server mode takes videos up to 100 MB and 10 minutes, needs a free Google sign-in, and deletes your video right after processing.
Use cases
- Email attachment limit. Gmail and Outlook cap attachments around 25 MB. A short phone video compressed to 720p often fits, with little visible loss on a phone screen.
- Upload to platform with size cap. Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, and many forms enforce per-file limits. Compress before upload to avoid the failed-upload surprise.
- Mobile data conservation. Sharing a video over cellular costs your viewer data. A compressed version (1080p → 720p, lower bitrate) is much smaller with little visible difference.
- Storage cleanup. Old phone videos at 4K eat gigabytes. Compress to 1080p for storage; original quality is rarely needed for viewing on phone screens.
How it works
- Add a video. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM or AVI. The server mode takes up to 100 MB and 10 minutes.
- Choose where to compress. "On this device" records a WebM in your browser in real time, with no upload. "On our server" makes an H.264 MP4 in a fraction of the time and needs a free Google sign-in.
- Pick quality and size. On our server: high quality, balanced or smallest file, plus a maximum height and an optional mute. On this device: a quality preset, the output width and the frame rate.
- Compress. Progress shows while it works. Your original file is never changed.
- Download. Save the smaller video and play it once before deleting the original.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I compress without visible loss?
Phone videos are usually recorded at a high bitrate, so they often shrink a lot with little visible change. Pushing further brings blocky artifacts and blur in motion.
Should I lower resolution or bitrate first?
Resolution drop (1080p → 720p) is usually less visible than aggressive bitrate drop. Reduce resolution first; tune bitrate second.
What codec is best?
H.264 (AVC): universal compatibility, which is why the server mode uses it. H.265 (HEVC): smaller files at the same quality but limited browser support. The on-device mode records VP9 or VP8 in WebM, because that is what browsers can record.
Why is the output not much smaller?
If the original was already heavily compressed, recompression yields little. Source bitrate matters — 4K at 25 Mbps compresses dramatically; 1080p at 5 Mbps already compresses little.
Is the video uploaded?
Only in the "On our server" mode, which sends it over HTTPS to our own processing server; the server deletes the video and the result right after processing. The "On this device" mode never uploads anything.
How long does compression take?
On this device, about as long as the video plays (1 minute of video takes about 1 minute). On our server it is much faster, plus the time to upload and download the file.
Pro tips
- Always work from the highest-quality source you have. Compressing a compressed video produces visible artifacts.
- Match output resolution to viewing target — 1080p for desktop, 720p for phone, 480p for messaging.
- For 4K originals you only need to view at 1080p, downscale once and keep the smaller version.
- Need an MP4 for WhatsApp, an iPhone or an upload form? Use the server mode; some apps do not accept WebM.
- Test playback before deleting the original — quality issues sometimes appear only on certain devices.
