About Twitter Card Generator
Twitter Cards (now X cards) are meta tags that turn a plain link into a rich preview when shared on X — image, title, description, attribution. There are four card types: summary (small image), summary_large_image (banner), app (App Store / Play Store), player (audio / video). The ZTools Twitter Card Generator produces all four, validates the meta tags, previews how the card will render on web and mobile, and emits HTML you can paste into your <head>. Same OG-style tags work for Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, and most modern crawlers.
Use cases
- Add rich previews to a static site. Personal blog or portfolio. Generate the meta tags once per page, paste into the head, and links shared on X stop looking naked.
- Validate before publishing. Wrong image dimensions or missing description? Generator catches these before you tweet a broken-looking link.
- Publish a podcast / video player card. Player card type embeds an iframe. Useful for podcast episodes — the tweet plays the audio inline.
- App-install card from a tweet. Direct link to App Store / Play Store with rating + screenshot. Card type "app".
How it works
- Pick card type. summary (small thumbnail + text), summary_large_image (full-bleed image at top), app (store metadata), player (HTTPS iframe of your audio / video).
- Fill required fields. Title (≤ 70 chars), description (≤ 200), image URL (≥ 300×157, max 5 MB, JPEG / PNG / WEBP / GIF), site handle (@yourhandle).
- Validate. Tool checks dimensions, file size, alt text, character limits. Shows pass/fail per rule.
- Copy meta tags. Paste the generated <meta> tags into your <head>. Verify via X's Card Validator (cards-dev.x.com).

Frequently asked questions
Do I still need OG tags?
Yes — most non-X crawlers (Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, iMessage) read OG. Twitter falls back to OG when twitter:* tags are missing. Always emit both for robustness.
What image size for summary_large_image?
1200×628 is the sweet spot — fills the X card without cropping, scales well to mobile. Min 300×157, max 5 MB.
Does X cache the card?
Yes — once X has fetched the card, it's cached. Use X's Card Validator to invalidate after changes.
Can I A/B-test cards?
X uses the URL as the cache key. Append `?v=2` to the URL to force re-fetch with new tags.
Privacy?
All generation in the browser. No upload.
Are Twitter Cards still called that?
X kept the technical name `twitter:card` for backwards compatibility. The product is "X cards" but the tags didn't change.
Pro tips
- Use 1200×628 image for summary_large_image — same dimensions work for OG, LinkedIn, Slack.
- Always include twitter:site and twitter:creator handles — drives follower acquisition from each share.
- After publishing tags, use X's Card Validator to bust the cache and confirm the rendered preview.
- Keep description under 125 chars to avoid truncation in cards on mobile devices.
