About DOCX to PDF
A DOCX to PDF converter renders a Microsoft Word .docx document into a fixed-format PDF that displays the same on any device, regardless of installed fonts or Word version. The ZTools DOCX to PDF Converter has two modes. On our server, LibreOffice prints the document with its paragraph styles, fonts, images, tables, headers and footers, page numbers and page breaks, for files up to 30 MB; it needs a free Google sign-in, and the server deletes your document right after processing. On this device, the document is read in your browser and rebuilt as a simpler PDF with its headings, bold and italic text, lists and PNG or JPEG images, on the page size you pick; nothing is uploaded, but complex layout is simplified.
Use cases
- Sending a final document to clients. PDFs look identical on every device; .docx files render differently on Mac vs PC vs mobile. Convert before sending the final version of contracts, proposals, and reports.

How it works

- Choose where to convert. "On our server" keeps the layout Word would print and needs a free Google sign-in. "On this device" converts in your browser with no upload.
- Pick the page (on this device). A4, US Letter and other sizes, in portrait or landscape. The server mode uses the page setup saved in the document.
- Download the PDF. A single PDF file. The original .docx is unchanged.

Frequently asked questions
Will the formatting be preserved exactly?
In the server mode, very closely: paragraph styles, tables, images, headers/footers and page numbers. Edge cases that may differ: exotic fonts, complex SmartArt, embedded videos, ActiveX controls. The on-device mode keeps structure and text styling but simplifies layout.
Does it preserve fonts?
On our server, Arial, Times New Roman, Courier New, Calibri and Cambria keep their line and page breaks, because the server has metric-compatible versions of those fonts. Other fonts fall back to a similar one unless they are embedded in the .docx.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
Only in the "On our server" mode, which sends it over HTTPS to our own processing server; the server deletes the document and the PDF right after processing and never runs its macros. The "On this device" mode never uploads anything, which suits the most confidential files.
Can I convert PDF back to DOCX?
Use the PDF to Word tool for the reverse direction. Note: DOCX → PDF is high-fidelity; PDF → DOCX often loses formatting because PDF doesn't store paragraph structure as cleanly.
Does it work for password-protected DOCX?
No — remove the password in Word first, then convert.
Pro tips
- Always convert the final version, not drafts — converted PDFs are awkward to edit.
- For job applications, also save a clean .docx — some recruiters specifically want it.
- Embed unusual fonts in your .docx before converting if you need them to render correctly.
- For long documents, generate the PDF, then verify the first and last pages render correctly before sharing.
