About Image to Text (OCR)
An image-to-text OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool reads text from images — photographed documents, screenshots, scanned pages, signs — and outputs editable plain text, replacing manual retyping. The ZTools Image to Text OCR sends your image to our own processing server, where the open-source Tesseract OCR engine reads it, usually in a second or two. It recognises printed text in 17 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German and more, up to three at once for mixed text) and returns plain text ready to copy or download. The server deletes your image right after processing. It needs a free Google sign-in.
Use cases
- Scanned-document conversion. A photographed receipt, invoice, or printed article. OCR converts the image to searchable / editable text in seconds, eliminating manual retyping.
- Screenshot text extraction. Quote text from a screenshot, error message, or social-media post when copy-paste is not available. OCR pulls the words instantly.
- Translation prep. Photograph foreign-language signs, menus, or labels; OCR gets the text out, then paste into a translator. Two-step pipeline solves the no-text-input problem.
- Accessibility / reading aid. Convert photographed printed material to text, then to speech via screen reader. Independent reading for users with low vision or print disability.
How it works
- Sign in and add an image. Sign in with Google, then drop a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or TIFF of up to 20 MB. Sharp focus and even light give the best result; tilted or dim photos lose accuracy.
- Pick the languages. Choose up to three of the 17 languages, such as English + Urdu. The wrong language gives garbled output, so set this first.
- Our server reads the text. Tesseract scans the image line by line, matches character shapes against its trained models and assembles words and lines. The server then deletes the image.
- Review the text. OCR is very accurate on clean printed text and weaker on handwriting or low-resolution images. Correct any obvious errors before using it.
- Copy or download. Copy the text to the clipboard or download it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is OCR?
Very accurate on clean printed text, less so on photos of pages, and weak on handwriting. Always proofread OCR output before relying on it.
Why does it sometimes confuse rn / m / l / 1 / 0 / O?
Visual similarity. The OCR engine guesses based on shape; some characters are nearly identical at low resolution. Higher-resolution input fixes most of these.
How do I improve accuracy?
Sharp focus. Even lighting (no shadows). Straight orientation (rotate before OCR). Plain background. High contrast (black ink on white). Higher resolution beats stronger algorithms.
Is the image uploaded?
Yes. OCR runs on our own processing server, not in your browser, so the image goes there over HTTPS. The server deletes it right after processing and keeps only a request record with no image data.
Why do I need to sign in?
Because OCR runs on our server, a free Google sign-in and a quick bot check keep it available for everyone. Each account has a daily limit.
Does it preserve formatting?
Basic line breaks and paragraph structure, yes. Tables, columns, and rich formatting are usually lost — OCR sees text, not layout. For PDFs, use the PDF OCR Text Extraction tool.
How long does it take?
Usually a second or two for a typical image, plus the upload time. Large, dense images take longer.
Pro tips
- Photograph in even, indirect light — direct flash creates glare and shadow that ruin OCR.
- Rotate the image to upright orientation before OCR; tilted text loses accuracy.
- Crop to just the text area; surrounding clutter (margins, edges) confuses the engine.
- For mixed-language text, pick all of its languages (up to three) in one run instead of one at a time.
- Always proofread OCR output before submitting (resumes, applications, legal). Auto-corrected nonsense slips through quietly.
