Background Remover — Cut Out Photo Backgrounds with AI, Free
Remove the background from a photo with AI and download a full-size transparent PNG. Free with a Google sign-in; your photo is deleted right after processing.
About AI Background Remover
A background remover detects the main subject of a photo and erases everything behind it, producing a transparent PNG cutout you can drop onto a new background, a product page or a presentation slide. The ZTools Background Remover sends your photo to our own processing server, where an AI segmentation model cuts out the subject in a few seconds; the server deletes the photo and the cutout right after sending the result back. You get a watermark-free PNG at the original size, with an optional solid background (white, black, light grey, blue or green) added when you download. It needs a free Google sign-in.
Use cases
- E-commerce product photos. Sellers on Etsy, eBay, Amazon, and Shopify need clean white-or-transparent backgrounds to meet listing rules. Shoot the product on any backdrop, run it through the remover, and download it on white or keep the transparency for your own backdrop.
- Profile picture cleanup. Replace the cluttered hostel-room background in your LinkedIn headshot with a clean colour. The model handles the hair line; for a blurred-office look, place the transparent PNG on that photo in any image editor.
- Marketing graphics and social posts. Designers need subject cutouts for hero banners, Instagram carousels, and pitch decks. Skip the Photoshop pen-tool detour: the automatic cut handles most photos in a few seconds.
- Passport and ID-style photos. Many countries require a specific solid background for ID photos. Download the cutout on white, or place the transparent PNG on the exact colour your country requires, then resize it to the required pixel size.
How it works
- Sign in and add your photo. Sign in with Google, then drop or pick a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP or TIFF image of up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels.
- Pick the quality. Balanced gives the cleanest edges in a few seconds. Fast returns a rougher cut in about a second.
- Our server cuts out the subject. The photo travels over HTTPS to our processing server, where a neural model finds the foreground subject (person, product, animal, vehicle) and returns a transparent PNG. The server then deletes both files.
- Choose a background. Keep it transparent, or pick white, black, light grey, blue or green. The colour is painted in your browser when you download.
- Download. A PNG at the original resolution, with no watermark.
Examples
Input: Person in front of cluttered office
Output: Transparent PNG of person; cluttered office removed
Hair edges are usually kept; very fine flyaway strands can soften.
Input: Watch on wooden table
Output: Transparent PNG of watch only
Crisp metal edges when the watch stands out clearly from the table.
Input: Two people, only one wanted
Output: Transparent PNG with both people
The model keeps every foreground subject. Crop the photo to one person before uploading, or erase the other in an image editor afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Does my photo upload to a server?
Yes. The AI model is too heavy to run well in a browser, so the photo goes over HTTPS to our own processing server, not to a third-party service. The server deletes the photo and the cutout right after sending the result back, and keeps only a request record with no image data.
Why do I need to sign in?
Because the work runs on our server, a free Google sign-in and a quick bot check keep it available for everyone. Each account has a daily limit.
Why is the edge fuzzy on hair?
Segmentation models produce a soft mask where the subject and the background blend. Use Balanced rather than Fast, and upload the largest, sharpest version of the photo you have.
Output is too large — how do I shrink it?
PNG with transparency is naturally larger than JPG. If you do not need transparency, pick a solid background, then compress the download with the Image Compressor.
Can it remove the background from a logo?
Yes — but for vector logos and screenshots, the magic-wand colour-key tools (Transparent PNG Maker) often give cleaner results because the boundaries are sharp.
Why does the cutout look soft compared to a Photoshop pen path?
Auto segmentation produces probability masks, not vector paths. For broadcast-quality cutouts, refine the edge in an image editor after the automatic pass.
Is there a batch mode?
No. The tool takes one photo at a time, and each photo counts once toward the daily limit.
Pro tips
- Shoot against a contrasting background when possible — the model finds edges faster and cleaner.
- Hair detail matters? Upload the original photo rather than a resized copy, so the model has more pixels around the silhouette.
- For e-commerce, download on white, then compress the file for the fastest-loading, most marketplace-compatible image.
- Save the transparent PNG as your master and re-composite onto different backgrounds rather than re-cutting each time.
- Try Fast for a quick preview, then run Balanced for the final cut.
